Writers at Wright Presents Mark Z. Danielewski

Event date:

Monday, October 15, 2012 - 7:00pm

Please join us for a special theatrical production of Mark Z. Danielewski's The Fifty Year Sword with MZD reading and conducting Chris O'Riley on piano.

The nationally best-selling author of House of Leaves and Only Revolutions, a finalist for the National Book Award in 2006, has crafted a powerfully chilling novella--a ghost story for grownup readers.

The Fifty Year Sword is a story set in East Texas, a local seamstress named Chintana finds herself responsible for five orphans who are not only captivated by a storyteller's tale of vengeance but by the long black box he sets before them. As midnight approaches, the box is opened, a fateful dare is made, and the children as well as Chintana come face to face with the consequences of a malice retold and now foretold.

MZD's full-color artwork appears throughout the book, as well as his signature use of mulitcolored text.

In 2010 and 2011, MZD teamed up with California-based theater artists and musicians to produce a dramatic reading of The Fifty Year Sword for Halloween—sold-out events which drew fans from as far away as Georgia.

Now, this perfomance is coming to Unity Temple in Oak Park. Please join us for a special theatrical reading of the novella, conducted by Danielewski, with Chris O'Riley on piano.

Mark Z. Danielewski was born in New York City and now lives in Los Angeles. He is the author of House of Leaves and Only Revolutions. He is working on a 27-volume novel called The Familiar.

"Danielewski's achievement lies in taking some staples of horror-fiction...and using his impressive erudition to recover the mythological and psychological origins of horror, and then enlisting the full array of avant-garde literary techniques to reinvigorate a genre long abandoned to hacks." --The Washington Post

"A lot is expected of Danielewski as a novelist who forgoes conventions, and he certainly delivers."-San Francisco Chronicle

Christopher O'Riley is a classical pianist and the host of the weekly National Public Radio program From the Top.
