Shaker Lakes Regional Nature Center by Charley Harper (American, 1922–2007)

A lifelong artist and conservationist, Charley Harper expressed his deep appreciation of nature through his design, forming the groundbreaking “minimal realism” that would become his artistic hallmark. He distilled the natural world into vivid, often humorous illustrations garnering him national renown. The featured image comes from a 1991 poster for the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes in Cleveland, Ohio, created in celebration of the area’s wildlife and the center’s many years of “serendipity in the suburbs.”

Thoughtfully conceived and engagingly intricate, our 500-piece jigsaw puzzles combine superb color reproduction, stunning and unusual images, and sturdy construction to delight generations of novice and veteran puzzleworkers.

Sloths are beloved for being the world's slowest mammal, so sedentary that algae grows on its furry coat. The plant gives it a greenish tint that is useful camouflage in the trees of its Central and South American rain forest home. There are two different types of sloths: two-toed and three-toed. Like other three-toed sloths, the brown-throated sloths (Bradypus variegatus) have an advantage that few other mammals possess: They have extra neck vertebrae that allows them to turn their heads some 270 degrees. All sloths are built for life in the treetops. They spend nearly all of their time aloft, hanging from branches with a powerful grip aided by their long claws. (Dead sloths have been known to retain their grip and remain suspended from a branch.) Sloths even sleep in trees, and they sleep a lot—some 15 to 20 hours every day. Even when awake they often remain motionless. At night they eat leaves, shoots, and fruit from the trees and get almost all of their water from juicy plants. Surprisingly, sloths are excellent swimmers, occasionally dropping from their treetop perches into water for a paddle. Sloths mate and give birth while hanging in the trees. Three-toed sloth babies are often seen clinging to their mothers—they travel by hanging on to them for the first nine month

Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) are known for the incredible mass migration that brings millions of them to California and Mexico each winter. North American monarchs are the only butterflies that make such a massive journey—up to 3,000 miles. The insects must begin this journey each fall ahead of cold weather, which will kill them if they tarry too long. Only monarchs born in late summer or early fall make the migration, and they make only one round trip. By the time next year's winter migration begins, several summer generations will have lived and died and it will be last year's migrators' great grandchildren that make the trip. Yet somehow these new generations know the way and follow the same routes their ancestors took—sometimes even returning to the same tree. Monarch butterflies begin life as eggs and hatch as larvae that eat their eggshells and, subsequently, the milkweed plants on which they were placed. Monarchs are dependent on milkweed plants, which larvae eat nearly exclusively. Fattening larvae become juicy, colorful caterpillars, then create a hard protective case around themselves as they enter the pupa stage. They emerge as beautifully colored, black-orange-and-white adults.

Wildlife artist Charley Harper, whose whimsical paintings portraying all kinds of creatures have delighted art and animal lovers for over sixty years, came by his love of nature as a child growing up in rural West Virginia. Harper (American, 1922–2007) developed his unique style while a student at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and the Art Students League in New York City. He went on to illustrate numerous books and to create works for many conservation organizations, including the Audubon Society and the National Park Service, for which The Coral Reef was produced. Harper designed more than fifty posters for various natural areas, parks, and conservation organizations, each celebrating a special part of our natural world in the unmistakable and vibrant style Harper called “minimal realism.”

Thoughtfully conceived and engagingly intricate, our 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzles combine superb color reproduction, stunning and unusual images, and sturdy construction to delight generations of novice and veteran puzzleworkers.

Untitled, 1965, by Edward Gorey

A Renaissance man of boundless imagination, Edward St. John Gorey (American, 1925-2000) authored over one hundred published works, designed sets and costumes for theatrical productions, and had a profound affection for ballet, literature, film, and animals. Cats were a particular Gorey favorite and appear in many of his works, as do a number of other creatures—some recognizable, and some known only in the trademark crosshatched drawings emanating from Gorey’s prolific pen. All of his characters inhabit a uniquely enigmatic world, where the lamentable frailties of existence are humorously assuaged by the hopeful delights of fantasy.
